Showy Goldenrod - Solidago speciosa
The Showy Goldenrod is a native that grows up to 5 feet tall and blooms late July to September-October.
Its flowers are bright yellow. They are densely packed cluster up to 12 inches long at the top of the stem.
There can be up to 300 small, 4- 10-ray flower heads in a cluster. Whereas, the flower clusters of many goldenrods
tend to droop or be pyramidal, Showy Goldenrod flower clusters are more cylindric and stays erect.
As evident by the photos on this page, pollinators are attracted to Showy Goldenrod. I counted over fifteen bees (bumblebees and honey bees) in one flower cluster.
Latin Name: Solidago: from Latin solido, meaning "to make whole or heal." this is a reference to the supposed, medicinal qualities of these plants.
